Animal Care and Training Manger

Andelin Family Farm is a farm in Northern Nevada that has seasonal festivals for the public. We own horses, ponies, cows, llamas, alpacas, sheep, goats, pigs, capybaras, emus, camels, chickens, porcupines, rabbits, peafowl & more. Animal education and interactions are a huge part of guest visits to the farm.

Overview

The Animal Care Manager plays a crucial role in overseeing the daily operations of our animal care facility. This position is responsible for ensuring the health and well-being of all animals at our farm while managing a farm hand staff. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in farm animal care, excellent leadership skills, and a passion for animal welfare.

Overall responsibility for the health and wellness of all animals on the farm. Maintaining an animal wellness plan which would include proper feeding & nutrition, habitat maintenance, enrichment, routine vaccinations, hoof trimmings, de-worming, de-horning, banding, testing for parasites and any other things the animals need to stay healthy. Some tasks we hire farriers & vets and some tasks we do ourselves. The more you know how to do the better.

Training animals. Socialization & desensitization so that guest interactions are safe for the animals and the guests. Ensure that handling animals can be done in a safe way for medical care and preventative maintenance care. Will vary by species.

Medical care. Assess and treat animals when there are injuries or illness. Coordinate with the vet for situations beyond our ability to treat.

Maintain animal habitats. Maintain habitats and pens to be presentable, clean and in good repair. Some habitats will have added enrichment type mechanisms to simulate the natural environment they would live in.

Oversee breeding program. Some of our animals are bred, and this position will monitor and oversee successful breeding including timing of the breeding. Responsible for assisting and monitoring births and newborns health and care.

Animal sales and acquisitions. This position will assist in animal sales to customers and the acquisition of new animals.

Animal education and awareness. Customer engagement - leading informative “Animal Talks” and giving behind the scenes farm tours.

Other tasks as needed by the farm operations. We are an “all hands on deck” operation and this position helps with other needs as they arise.

Customer Service. All farm staff are expected to be a team player and to treat other staff and customers with kindness and respect.

Supervise Farm Hand staff. Training and monitoring to ensure other staff that feed and care for animals do it correctly. Responsible for updating staff when things change such as animal diets and feeding routines.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in farm animal care.
  • Strong knowledge of animal behavior and handling techniques.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting as needed for animal care tasks.
  • Be willing to work at different hours as needed to monitor and check on animal births or new babies.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively lead a team and interact with farm owners and staff.
  • Physically able to lift, stoop, bend, twist and move things daily. Ability to be on your feet all day is required. Feed bags are 50 pounds and hay bales are 100 pounds. This is a very physically demanding position.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage records and schedules efficiently.
  • A compassionate attitude towards animals and a commitment to their welfare.
